Clemson Tied for Fourth Entering Final Day of Insperity Augusta State Invitational

AUGUSTA, GA – Miller Capps played two under par golf for 36 holes on Saturday to lead Clemson to a fourth place standing after two rounds of the Insperity Augusta State Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, GA. Clemson is tied for fourth with rival South Carolina at seven over par as a team after two rounds.

Clemson is just seven shots out of the lead held by Augusta State entering the final round. The top six teams are separated by just eight shots.

The 15-team field played 36 holes on Saturday and the tournament will conclude on Sunday on the par 72 hole course. Thirteen of the 15 teams are ranked in the top 50 in the nation.

Capps, who is in seventh place in the individual race, had rounds of 69 and 73 to rank in a tie for seventh place after two rounds. His opening round included four birdies, an eagle and three bogeys. His eagle came on the par four 410-yard 10th hole when he made a shot from 80 yards away for a two. He shot a 33 on the back nine, the best nine-hole score of the day for a Clemson golfer. Capps is just two shots of the lead that is held by four different players.

Clemson’s second best player for the day was Stephen Behr, a freshman who has been the Tigers best player in terms of stroke average this year. Behr had rounds of 70-75 and stands in a tie for 14th place with a 145 score after two rounds. Behr also made a shot from the fairway in the first round, as he made a shot from 75 yards on the par five 17th hole. Behr’s 70 in the first round included three birdies, an eagle and three bogeys.

Senior Crawford Reeves stands in 19th place individually with a 146 score. The native of Greenville had six birdies in the second round, the most by a Tiger in a round on Saturday. He had a wild ride on the back nine with five birdies, three bogeys and just one par.

Billy Kennerly had 78 in the first round, but came back strong with a 73 in the second round. His 151 total stands 45th. Freshman Cody Proveaux had rounds of 77 and 76 on Saturday. He made double bogey in two of his first three holes in the first round, but battled back after that.”I am glad we are near the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round,” said Clemson Head Coach Larry Penley. “Win or lose on Sunday it will be a great experience for a young team.” Clemson has a lineup with three freshmen and a sophomore.

“We need to eliminate the big numbers if we are to make a run on Sunday. We had to count a triple bogey in the first round and a couple of double bogeys also. We had some opportunities for a lot more birdies, but didn’t convert enough putts. We will have to pick and choose where to be aggressive on Sunday.”
