Clemson Tied for Eighth after 36 Holes at Inverness Intercollegiate
CLEMSON, S.C. —
Kian Rose had a pair of 70s on Monday lead the Clemson men’s golf team to a tie for ninth place after two rounds of the Inverness Intercollegiate at famed Inverness Golf Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Clemson is tied for ninth with Wake Forest and Purdue in the 14-team field that includes nine teams the reached the NCAA National Tournament last year. Auburn, the defending NCAA Champion is in first place at four-under par 548. Texas Tech is second at 553, Virginia is third at 555 and Oklahoma is fourth at 556.
Inverness, which has been the site of six professional major championships, is undergoing some renovation and the course is playing to a par 69 for this 54-hole event that will conclude on Tuesday. Monday’s 36 holes were played in 15 mile per hour winds, a key reason only 10 of he 85 players were under par through 36 holes.
Clemson, who won the Chapel Hill Regional last year and finished 22nd at the NCAA National Tournament in Carlsbad, CA, last year, had an opening day lineup that included two seniors, two true freshman and a junior playing in his first tournament as a Tiger.
Rose, a red-shirt senior, had consecutive rounds of 70 on Monday and is in a tie for 18th place in the 85-player field. Rose had an eventful second round with seven birdies, including four in a row at one point. But he had consecutive double bogeys late in the round in the windy conditions.
Lucas Augustsson had the top round of the day among Clemson golfers with an even-par 69 in the morning round that included three birdies and three bogeys. Clemson’s first ever golfer from Sweden had a 32 on the front nine. Augustsson was a two-time All-AAC player at East Carolina before transferring to Clemson this summer. He had a 73 in the second round, giving him a 142 total through 36 holes, good enough for 28th place.
Freshman Colin Salema had rounds of 74 and 70 on his first day as a Clemson golfer and his 144 total is third best among Tigers. His second round 70 included two birdies and three bogeys. He stands in a tie for 44th after two rounds.
Freshman Rich Wills had rounds of 74-72 for a 146 total that is tied for 65th in the field. Senior Andrew Swanson also had rounds of 74-72 and is tied with Wills for 65th after 36 holes.
