Clemson Tennis Falls To South Carolina, 4-3, On Sunday

COLUMBIA, SC – The 27th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team was narrowly defeated by #26 South Carolina, 4-3, on Sunday at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center in Columbia, SC. The loss dropped the Tigers to 3-2 for the year while the Gamecocks bettered their season record to 5-1.

Clemson won the doubles point for the third straight match but was unable to claim enough victories during singles play to post the team win.

In the top doubles match-up, Clemson’s Carol Salge and Federica van Adrichem won an 8-4 decision over South Carolina’s duo of Gira Schofield and Natasa Vuckovic. At the flight three position, Daniela Alvarez and Alexandra Luc defeated Danielle Wiggins and Christyn Lucas, 8-5 to clinch the doubles point for the Tigers. The Gamecocks’ team of Megan McGavock and Laura Ganzer claimed an 8-5 decision over Maria Brito and Marie Scriba at flight two.

Alvarez and Luc also posted victories in the singles line-up for Clemson. Alvarez won her flight three contest over Wiggins by a score of 6-4, 6-1, while Luc defeated Miranda Gutierrez at flight six, 7-5, 2-6, 10-7.

South Carolina’s Schofield, tied for 59th ranking in the latest ITA poll, rallied to upset Clemson’s 41st-ranked van Adrichem at the flight one position in a three-set match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. In the flight two contest, #62 Vuckovic also claimed a three-set match over Clemson’s Brito (7-6(5), 1-6, 6-3). Ganzer then defeated Salge at flight four, 7-5, 6-3, while McGavock won a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Scriba.

The Tigers will next face the Georgia Bulldogs on the road in a mid-week match on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
