Clemson Takes Second Game Against Coastal Carolina 7-3 Wednesday Night

Clemson, SC- Clemson took advantage of a five-run third inning to defeat Coastal Carolina 7-3 Wednesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The two teams split the mid-week series with one win apiece. The win improved the #15 Tigers to 26-10 on the season, while the Chanticleers fell to 27-10 overall.

Freshman Kris Harvey (3-0) earned the win for the Tigers after scattering four hits over 5.0 innings. Steven Carter (7-2) was credited with the loss for Coastal Carolina after giving up two earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched.

For the second consecutive game, Coastal Carolina got on the board in the first inning. Ryan McGraw led off with a walk, stole second, and then advanced home after Brett Grandstrand singled up the middle.

The Chanticleers extended the lead to 2-0 in the second after Patrick Nichols hit a double to left center field to score Mike Costanzo from first base.

Clemson erupted for five runs in the third inning. Steve Pyzik drove in the first run with a single to right field. Chanticleer catcher Nichols then misplayed a ball hit by Herman Demmink, allowing Evans to score from third. Jeff Hourigan and Brad McCann added RBI singles later in the inning. Kyle Frank pushed the Tiger lead to 5-2 with an RBI double to right center.

Coastal Carolina got one run back in the top of the sixth. After a leadoff triple by Jeff Baker, designated hitter Mike Costanzo drove him in with an RBI single to right field.

Clemson tacked on two runs in the seventh. Pyzik and Roberto Valiente led off the inning with consecutive walks. The two advanced one base each on a passed ball and then Pyzik scored on a wild pitch by Chanticleer reliever Mike Andreas. Michael Johnson plated the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right.

Clemson will travel to College Park, MD this weekend to take on the Maryland Terrapins in ACC action. Each of the three games will be broadcast live by Clemson Tiger Sports Properties and live stats will be available on www.clemsontigers.com. Friday’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
