CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson Tigers swept both matches on Sunday defeating Boston College, 7-0, and Elon, 4-3, at Duckworth Family Tennis Facility. With both wins, Clemson improves to 10-8 overall and 1-5 in ACC play as Boston College falls to 4-10 (0-6 ACC) and Elon drops to 8-6 on the year.
The Tigers started off strong against Boston College in doubles action as Teodor Giusca and Max Smith claimed the victory on Court 2 right before Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Matt Pitts sealed the doubles point on Court 3.
Clemson’s dominance continued in singles play as the Tigers pulled out wins on every court for a 7-0 sweep of the Eagles. This marked the second straight ACC singles win for freshman Pitts.
Clemson continued the momentum into the second match of the day against Elon as the Tigers won yet another doubles point, courtesy of a win on Court 1 from No. 59 pair Ryuhei Azuma and Spencer Whitaker and a victory on Court 2 from Giusca and Smith.
Smith continued his impressive day by winning the first singles point on Court 6 before the Tigers dropped the match on Court 5. Giusca and Azuma both came up with huge wins on Courts 1 and 2, respectively, bringing the Tigers to a 4-1 score. Elon’s Campbell and Condos both won battles on Court 3 and Court 4, but the Tigers ultimately took the match, 4-3.
“I am really happy with the way we competed today,” said Head Coach Robbie Weiss. “The windy conditions were very tough, but the boys stuck to their plans and executed well. We played better doubles today which has been a struggle the last several matches. I am hoping we can take the momentum from today and our tough battle with Georgia Tech this past Wednesday and go on a run in the home stretch of the ACC season.”
Up next, the Tigers will travel to play North Carolina on Friday, April 1 before taking on Duke on Sunday, April 3. First serve against the Tar Heels will be at 5:00 p.m. while the Tigers will play Duke at noon.
