CLEMSON, SC – Clemson signee Marcus Thornton has been named Mr. Basketball in the state of Georgia by both the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Thornton, also named first-team All-State over the weekend, averaged 24 points and 12 rebounds per game this past season and led Westlake High School to a berth in the AAAAA championship game.
When he joins the team this summer, Thornton will be the third player on Clemson’s roster to have earned the title of Mr. Basketball as a high school senior in his respective state. Demontez Stitt was North Carolina’s Mr. Basketball in 2007, while Milton Jennings earned the recognition for South Carolina in 2009.
Thornton, a 6-foot-8 forward from Atlanta, was also named Player-of-the-Year for the South Fulton area, as part of the AJC’s All-Metro Teams. It puts a close to a tremendous senior season for Thornton, who was also the Region 4-AAAAA Player-of-the-Year and a member of the All-Tournament Team as well. He has been selected to play in both the Georgia High School Association North-South All-Star Game and the Capital Classic.
