CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson University men’s basketball team rallied past Penn State 101-94 in a double overtime thriller in Littlejohn Coliseum on Tuesday night.
The last double-overtime game for Clemson came on March 2, 2014 when the Tigers prevailed over Maryland 77-73 in two extra periods.
Clemson found themselves down six after the opening stanza, 35-29, and were helped by a 13-2 run to begin the second half to battle back. After tying regulation 71-71 and getting down as many as two with 20 seconds left, PJ Hall (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) came up big with a post-up basket with five seconds on the clock to force double overtime.
Clemson emptied the tank in the second overtime stanza and outscored Penn State 18-11 to secure a win in the last ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
The Tigers (6-2) were led by Hunter Tyson (Monroe, N.C./Piedmont) Hall who combined for 46 of the Tigers’ 101 points. Tyson scored a career-high 24 points on an impressive 7-for-11 from the floor while also tallying nine boards. Hall made his first start of the season for the Tigers and delivered in a massive way. Alex Hemenway (Newburgh, Indiana/Castle) was lethal from long range connecting on four out of his six three point attempts. Hemenway finished the night with 15 points and a career-high three assists.
Josh Beadle (Columbia, S.C./Cardinal Newman) along with Ben Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Westminster Academy) provided valuable minutes off the bench in the win. Beadle was a calming presence tonight, running the point guard late in the second half and in both overtimes due to Chase Hunter’s (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) foul trouble. Beadle ended the game tying his career-high in assists with three and came up huge on the defensive end with two electrifying blocks in the second overtime. Middlebrooks contributed with eight points which included a timely three-point play in the second half.
Clemson returns to Littlejohn Coliseum on Friday to begin ACC play versus Wake Forest the game is slated to be at 7 p.m. on RSN.
