Columbia, S.C.- The top-ranked men’s soccer program played South Carolina to a 2-2 draw in the first match up in the Palmetto Series and the Tigers’ first road match of 2024. The even score moves Clemson to 1-0-1 on the year while South Carolina now sits at 1-0-2.
The Tigers were the first to get on the board with a goal scored by Alex Meinhard with 20:04 left in the half. The goal was scored after the Gamecocks saved a penalty kick attempt and the ball deflected back to Meinhard where he put it in the back of the goal.
After a competitive first half, the score was tied 1-1 going into the match’s second half. The Gamecocks scored their second goal of the night early in the second half giving them the first lead of the match in the 46’.
Misei Yoshizawa tied the match for the Tigers in the 66’. Ransford Gyan recorded the first assist of his career as Yoshizawa bounced the ball off the crossbar and into the goal.
Clemson will now look ahead to its conference home opener on Friday, Sept. 6 against one of the newest members of the ACC, Stanford. The match is slated for 7 p.m. on ACCNX, and will immediately follow Clemson’s annual First Friday parade, which celebrates the start of the home football season.
