MOBILE, AL – The Tiger women’s tennis team picked up its eighth win of the 2006 season with a 5-2 victory over Troy on Monday at the David Lubel Memorial Courts on the campus of South Alabama. The loss dropped the Trojans to 7-3 on the year.
Clemson won the doubles point with victories at flights two and three. Daniela Alvarez and Alexandra Luc, ranked 40th in the Fila/ITA doubles poll, defeated Rawia Elsisi and Suzanne Jones of Troy, 8-2, while Maria Brito and Marie Scriba won an 8-3 decision over Nicole Shaw and Annabelle Bares. Troy’s Tsitsi Masviba and Claudia Strauss upset the ninth-ranked team of Carol Salge and Federica van Adrichem in the top doubles position, 9-8, to avoid the sweep.
The Tigers then claimed four singles matches for the victory. Alvarez downed RawiaElsisi in the flight one contest by a score of 6-2, 6-3, and van Adrichem won her match at the flight two position over Strauss, 6-4, 7-5. At flight five, Luc defeated Caroline Jouanin, 6-2, 6-2, while Clemson’s Kathi Gerber won a 6-4, 6-2 decision against Shamiaa Elsisi at the flight six spot.
Salge fell at flight three to Masviba in a three-set battle, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(10-7), and Bares defeated Brito at the flight four position by a score of 6-1, 7-5 to give Troy its points in the match. The Tigers return to action on Tuesday when they will face South Alabama in Mobile, AL. The teams will take to the court at 11:00 AM.
