Clemson Has First Round Lead at Battle of Briar’s Creek

CLEMSON, S.C. — Freshman Rich Wills shot a season best 68 and junior Thomas Higgins had a season best 69 to lead Clemson to a 10-under-par team score of 278 and the lead at the end of the first round of the Battle at Briar’s Creek at John’s Island, S.C.

The teams were to play 36 holes on Monday but fog delayed the start of the tournament by a few hours. Most of the teams played between 3-6 holes of the second round Monday afternoon. The Tigers are the defending champion at the event on the par 72 course that measures 7,117 yards. This year’s field includes 14 teams from around the Southeast.

Wills had five birdies in firing nine-hole scores of 34-34, while Higgins’ round of 69 also included five total birdies and nine-hole scores of 36-33. Wills was in second place after the first round, while Higgins stood in fifth place. He finished fourth at this tournament last year, helping the Tigers to the team championship.

Andrew Swanson, Clemson’s top golfer in terms of stroke entering this tournament, had three birdies in shooting a two-under-par 70 and gave Clemson a third player in the top 10 with an eighth place standing. He finished second at this tournament last year.

Redshirt senior Kian Rose had a 71, one-under-par, to round out Clemson’s four counting scores. Like Wills and Higgins, Rose had five birdies. Lucas Augustsson, a junior transfer from East Carolina, had a 73.

Play continues on Tuesday. Live scoring is available HERE.
