Clemson Finishes Third at Nike Golf Collegiate

Clemson, S.C.—Colby Patton shot a season-best four-under-par 67 and Turk Pettit added a 69 on Tuesday to lead Clemson to a third-place finish at the Nike Intercollegiate at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club near Portland, Oregon.   The 15-team field featured eight of the top 21 teams in the nation according to the latest College Golf Coaches Poll.

Clemson finished third with a team score of 835 on the par 71 layout, 12 shots behind champion and ninth-ranked Oklahoma and seven shots back of fourth-ranked Wake Forest.  The  15th ranked Tigers should move up in the next rankings as they finished higher in the standings than perennial national power Oklahoma State by five shots, 10th ranked Texas by eight, seventh-ranked Duke by 12 shots, and third-ranked Baylor by 24.

Patton had an eagle and five birdies on Tuesday in leading the Tigers for a second straight day.  The junior had an eagle on the par five fourth hole, the only eagle of the tournament by a Clemson golfer and the third eagle of his career. The second generation Tiger (Chris Patton, 1986-90) played the last 12 holes in five-under-par to finish 21st in the field of 75 golfers. He was Clemson’s best player over the last 36 holes with a 135 total.

Pettit shot a two-under 69 thanks to five birdies and three bogeys.  He finished strong with birdies on two of his last four holes.  His even-par score of 213 for the 54 holes ranked in a tie for 23rd.    It was his third round in the 60s this year and 21st of his career.

Jacob Bridgeman was Clemson’s top golfer  for the tournament with a 208 total off of scores of 69-68-71 for a 10th place finish, his first top 10 of the year.   Bridgeman had a team best 14 birdies in the tournament.

Kyle Cottam shot a 76 in the final round, but shot 69-68 in the first two rounds and finished 23rd for his second top 25 of the year. William Nottingham, the lone senior in the Clemson lineup, finished with a 74 on Tuesday and shot one-over-par 214 for the tournament, good enough for a 30th place.

Clemson returns to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Jack Nicklaus Match Play at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.   Clemson and Georgia Tech were co-champions of the event last year.
