Clemson Finishes Ninth at Schooner Fall Classic

Clemson, SC—Senior Ana Paula Vades shot a one-under-par 69 on Sunday to lead Clemson to a final round 284 and a ninth-place finish out of 15 teams at the Schooner Fall Classic at the University of Oklahoma’s Belmar Golf Club in Norman.     The field included 11 of the top 50 teams in the nation, including third-ranked Texas, who won the tournament by nine shots with a team score of two-under par 838.

Valdes round of 69 included four birdies and three bogeys.  The native of Mexico improved her scoring each day as she had scores of 75-71-69 in finishing in a tie for 28th with a score of 215, five over par.   She improved her individual finish by 18 places with her final round 69, her first round in the 60s  in this young season, but the 14th of her career.   Valdes played the par three holes at two-under-par for the tournament, tied for second best in the field of 81 golfers, and her 10 birdies led the Clemson team.

Ivy Shepherd was Clemson’s top golfer over the 54 holes with a score of 214, four-over-par on the 6,048 yard course that played to a par 70.   Shepherd tied her career best score with a 65 in the second round on Saturday.  On Sunday she had a 74, but still finished with a 25th place ranking.  She played the par four holes at three-under-par for the weekend, tied for the best in the field.

Clemson’s second best player on Sunday and third best golfer for the weekend was freshman Savannah Grewal.  The rookie for Canada had an even-par 70 in the final round after registering scores of 72 and 75 in the first two rounds.   She finished 38th in the tournament after she had four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey in the final round.

Sophomore Lindsay May had a final round 71 that included 15 pars, two bogeys and a  birdie.  She finished  53rd with a 54-hole score of 220.   Alexandra Swayne was Clemson’s non-counter in the final round with a 78, but she was the Tigers second best player on Saturday with an even par 70.  She finished 59th with a 222 total.

Kelley Hester’s team will now take a week off and prepare for the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational October 11-13.
