Clemson Finishes Fourth at Battle of Briar’s Creek; Rose Co-Medalist

CLEMSON, S.C. — Kian Rose had a final round 70 to earn co-medalist honors with a tournament score of 209 at the Battle of Briar’s Creek at Briar’s Creek Golf Club on John’s Island, S.C. Rose led Clemson to a tie for fourth place out of 14 teams. The Tigers finished with a 54-hole team score of 10-under par 854.

It was Rose’s 33rd career tournament as a Tiger, but his first medalist honor. The native of Gauteng, South Africa had scores of 71-68-70 for his 54 holes. His second-round 68 tied his career low round at Clemson and his -7 score vs. par for the tournament tied for the best of his career.

Rose led the tournament in birdies with 17 and he was second in scoring average on par five holes with a -6 under-par average of 4.50. Rose was co medalist with Garret Risner of Elon and Michael Vick of NC State.

NC State won the tournament with a score of 19-under par 845, while host school College of Charleston was second at 851. West Virginia was third at 852. Clemson tied for fourth with Wake Forest and Elon.

Freshman Rich Wills also had the best finish of his young career with a 210 score, six under par, to finish in a tie for fourth place. Wills, a native of Cramerton, N.C., had scores of 68-73-69. It marked the first time he has had two scores in the 60s in the same tournament. It was also his best finish and best score vs. par in his young career.

Thomas Higgins was Clemson’s third best golfer in the event with a one-over-par score of 217. He finished 31st after rounds of 69-76-72. Lucas Augustsson finished in 42nd place with a 221 total, five-over-par. Andrew Swanson finished 50th with scores of 70-78-75 for a 223 total.

Clemson also had four golfers compete in an individual tournament in nearby Hollywood, S.C. at the Links of Stono Ferry. Sean Curran led the way with a 19th place finish after totaling 220 for his three rounds (78-68-74). His second round 68 was a career best.

Will Baker, a sophomore from Statham, GA finished 22nd with a six-over-par score of 222 on the par 72 layout. He had rounds of 71-73-78. Junior Justin Burroughs of Pensacola, Fla. finished 31st with a 15-over-par total of 231 (74-75-82). Freshman Jacob Immelman finished 39th with a 258 total for 54 holes.

Clemson will next be in action Feb. 17-19 at the Watersound Invitational in Panama City, Fla. at the Shark’s Tooth Country Club.
