Clemson Finishes Fifth at Lewis Chitengwa Memorial

Final Results

CLEMSON, S.C. — Senior Kian Rose shot an even-par 71 on Tuesday to lead Clemson to a fifth place finish out of 12 teams at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial Golf Tournament at the University of Virginia Birdwood Course in Charlottesville, VA. The event is named after former two time Virginia All-American Lewis Chitengwa.

The 12 teams in the field played in difficult weather conditions on Tuesday as winds blew consistently at 30 miles per hour. As a result the average score was 75.86 on the par 71 course that measures 7,116 yards. Only one of the 18 holes played under par.

Clemson had a team score of nine-over-par 293 on Tuesday, tied for the third best score in the field. Among the teams Clemson defeated on Tuesday was 11th ranked Florida State, who won the three-day tournament, but had a team score of 298 on Tuesday. Florida State finished with a team score of 13-under-par 839 for the 54 holes.

Thirteenth-ranked Virginia, the host school, shot a three-over-par 287 on Tuesday, best in the field by five shots, and finished the 54 holes with an eight-under-par score of 844.

Rose was one of just six players to score under par on Tuesday. He had three birdies, all on the front nine, and finished with three bogeys for his second straight even-par round. Rose had a 76 in the first round, then shot 71-71 for the final two rounds to finish 32nd in the tournament with a 218 score, five-over-par.

Andrew Swanson and Lucas Augustsson were Clemson’s top players for the tournament with 54 hole scores of 214, good enough for 14th place. Augustsson shot a one-over-par 72 on Tuesday with five birdies and six bogeys. He had consistent rounds of 71-71-72. He was Clemson’s top golfer on par five holes for the tournament with a 4.42 average, and tied Swanson for the team lead in birdies with 13.

Swanson had an opening round 67, best by a Clemson golfer at the tournament. He followed with rounds of 73-74. He led the Tigers with a 4.04 stroke average on par four holes and also shot 4.67 on par five holes.

Freshman Colin Salema had a final round 76, but finished in the top 25 with a 217 score. He had a first round 69 to rank among the leaders. He had 11 birdies and tied Swanson for the best performance among Tigers on par four holes at 4.04.

Freshman Rich Wills had a 79 on Tuesday to finish with a score of 225 for the 54 holes, 52nd place.

Junior Thomas Higgins played as an individual and had a 214 score for the 54 holes, giving Clemson three players tied for 14th place. He was one of just seven players to birdie the par 3, 240-yard 17th hole on Tuesday. The native of Ireland had rounds of 69-72-73.

Clemson’s next tournament April 24-28, at the ACC Tournament at The Club @Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
