Clemson Finishes 9th at Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate

CLEMSON, S.C.— Kian Rose,  Jacob  Bridgeman  and Kyle Cottam all shot under-par rounds to lead Clemson to a four-under-par team score of 284 in Sunday’s final round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate in Alpharetta, Ga. The Tigers finished tied for ninth as a team at the 15-team tournament that included eight of the top 25  teams  and 20 of the top 100 players in the nation according to the latest Golfstat.com rankings.

Pepperdine, the defending NCAA Champion, won the tournament with a 42-under-par score of 822, four shots better than Texas A&M’s 826.  They were the two dominant teams of the tournament. Wake Forest was third at 841 and Tennessee was fourth at 842. Stanford, one of three Pac 12 teams in the national field, was fifth at 846, and host school Georgia Tech was sixth at 850.

The tournament at the par 72 Golf Club of Georgia Lakeside Course that  measured 7092 yards was the final event of the fall schedule for Jordan Byrd’s first Clemson team. The Tigers next team competition will be at the Albany Collegiate in New Providence, Bahamas Feb. 14-16. That tournament is played at the same course as next month’s Hero Challenge, a PGA Tour event hosted by Tiger Woods.

Rose led Clemson for the 54-hole Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate with a 213 score, three-under par. The native of South Africa had rounds of 74-69-70 in his first career tournament competing in the Clemson lineup.  He played as an individual in a tournament earlier in the year. Rose had 12 birdies in the  tournament and finished in a tie for 23rd place.

Bridgeman had a second straight two-under-par 70 on Sunday, giving him a 215 total for the tournament and a 29th place finish. The senior from Inman, SC had 11 birdies and averaged a team best 4.50 on par five holes for the tournament.  Ranked in the top 15 in the latest PGA University rankings, Bridgeman finishes the fall with a team best 69.67 stroke average, best on the team.

Cottam shot a one-under-par 71 on Sunday. He improved in each round with scores of 73-72-71 for his even-par 216 total, which tied for 37th in the field of 75 golfers. Cottam finished the fall with a 70.67 stroke average.

Zack Gordon tied for the second best Tiger in the tournament with a 215  score, good enough for 29th place. The senior from Gaffney had scores of 68-74-73. His opening round 68 was the best individual round by a Clemson golfer at the tournament, and he finished the 54 holes with a team best 14 birdies, including seven in the first round.

True freshman Andrew Swanson made his Clemson debut as a member of the team lineup and finished with a 222 score.  He had a final round 76. He had two triple bogeys on par four holes early in his round on Sunday, but played the other 16 holes at two-under-par.
