Clemson Finishes 8th at Florida State Matchup

Clemson, S.C.—Melena Barrientos shot a one-under-par 71 on Sunday to record a 20th place individual finish and lead Clemson to an eighth-place team finish at the Florida State Matchup at Seminole Legacy Golf Course in Tallahassee.

Clemson finished with a 912 team score in the 12 team field that included eight top 50 teams according to the latest Golfstat computer poll.   It was Clemson’s last tournament of the month, as the Tigers will next be in action at the Clover Cup in Mesa, Arizona  March 11-13.

Barrientos had a 224 score for the 54-hole event that was held Feb. 25-27.   She had 12 birdies for the tournament to rank third in the field that included 69 players.     Her 71 was the top round by a Clemson golfer in the tournament on the par 72 course that measures 6,285 yards.

Barrientos got off to a tough start on Sunday with a three-over-par score for her first five holes, but ran off a streak of six birdies and three pars over nine holes to get to three-under-par on the day.    It was her sixth under-par round of the year, tops among the Clemson golfers for the season.

Callista Rice and Savannah Grewal ranked tied for second among Clemson golfers at the tournament that included teams from the ACC, SEC and Pac 12.   Rice had an opening round 74 that was a highlight of her tournament, while Grewal was Clemson’s top player on par five holes with a 475 figure.  Rice and Grewal tied for 41st with identical 232 scores.

Senior Lindsay May and sophomore Annabelle Pancake were both one shot back at 233 for the 54 holes and tied for 48th place.   May was Clemson’s top golfer over the first 36 holes with rounds of 75 and 76.  Her 3.0 stroke average on par three holes was among the best in the field.   Pancake had a second round 75 and had a 4.92 stroke average on par five holes to highlight her weekend.

Third-ranked Oregon won the tournament with an 861 score, 14 shots ahead of host school Florida State.
