CLEMSON, S.C. – The 52nd-ranked Clemson men’s tennis team fell to Georgia Tech 5-2 Friday night at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. The match was the first in ACC play for both teams. Clemson falls to 7-6 on the season and 0-1 in the ACC with the loss, while Georgia Tech stands at 8-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
The Yellow Jackets clinched the doubles point in the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Clemson’s Hunter Harrington and Luke Johnson led at No. 1, 7-5, but fell 8-7 in a tiebreaker. Clemson’s Austin Ansari and Alejandro Augusto won at No. 3 singles 8-5.
In the singles portion of play, Augusto, a senior captain this season, rolled through his match at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-0. Georgia Tech clinched the match with wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles. The two teams played the final two singles matches out, and Clemson’s Daffra Sanon picked up a win at No. 5, closing out Georgia Tech’s Cole Fiegel in two sets.
The Tigers are hosting a youth tennis clinic on Saturday prior to the women’s tennis team’s match vs. Louisville. The clinic is free, and will be held from 2-3 p.m. at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on the two courts adjacent to the stadium courts.
Clemson plays two more matches at home this weekend, on Sunday against College of Charleston and Presbyterian College. The match against College of Charleston starts at 10 a.m., followed by the match against Presbyterian College at 3 p.m. Live scoring and Twitter updates will be available throughout both matches.
