NORCROSS, Ga. – Georgia Tech downed 26th-ranked Clemson 4-1 in the semifinals of the ACC men’s tennis tournament at the Racquet Club of the South on Saturday afternoon. Tech now advances to the championship match on Sunday.
Clemson fell to 20-11 with the loss, while Tech improved to 15-6. Chuck Kriese’s men’s team will now await a bid to the NCAA Regionals, which will be played May 14-16. Clemson had reached the semifinals of the ACC tournament with a 4-3 first-round victory over North Carolina.
Tech won the doubles point, winning at #2 and #3 doubles by the same 8-5 score. In singles play, Clemson’s Pablo Bellagamba defeated Tech’s Matt Cozad, 6-3, 6-4 at number-two singles. Bellagamba improved to 23-14 with the victory.
Tech captured straight set wins at #1 and #3 singles. Benjamin Cassaigne defeated Clemson’s Ryan Bauer, 6-4, 6-3, and Tech’s Roberto Suarez downed Clemson’s Jos Goffi, 6-3, 6-4. Goffi fell to 31-17 for the season with the loss and he had been 8-1 against ACC competition prior to Saturday.
The deciding match was at #5 singles where Tech’s Jason Jeong downed Clemson’s Luis Garcia, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. It was the only three-set match of the day. Garcia had been 7-2 against ACC teams this year. When Jeong won, the match the number four and number six singles matches were suspended, thus the 4-1 final score.
