CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #19 Clemson women’s tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to 16th-ranked Virginia on the road in Charlottesville on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Tigers dropped to 5-5 (3-2 ACC), while the Cavaliers improved to 8-4 (4-1 ACC).
Doubles play began with a 6-2 win by Joana Eidukonyte and Daniela Ruiz at No. 3. The duo is now 6-0 on the season. The Tigers lost the next two doubles matches, including a 6-3 contest at No. 1, where Ayan Broomfield and Fernanda Navarro faced the nation’s 23rd-ranked doubles team of Danielle Collins and Meghan Kelly.
Virginia started quickly in singles, and never let up, winning at No. 2, 6 and 5 to clinch the match. Broomfield, ranked 50th, played a tough first set against Collins, ranked No. 3 in the nation, before falling, 6-4, 6-2. Navarro (#92) battled against 69th-ranked Stephanie Nauta, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 3. Tristen Dewar fought back after dropping the first set 6-3, to win the second, 6-3, before falling in a third-set 10-point tiebreak.
After two matches on the road, the Tigers return home for two next weekend. Clemson hosts Florida State on Saturday, March 12 at noon and Syracuse on Sunday, March 13 at 10 a.m.
