Clemson Escapes Tallahassee With ACC Win; Earns Harris Record

TALLAHASSEE, FL – The 19th-ranked women’s tennis team used comeback, upset wins over top-50 singles players at flights two and three to complete a 5-2 win over No. 36 Florida State in Tallahassee on Sunday. The Tigers (12-5, 1-2 ACC) gave head coach Nancy Harris her 85th career ACC victory, moving ahead of Andy Johnston for the school record.

Clemson moved to 27-8 all-time against the Seminoles (5-5, 1-2 ACC). The Tigers went 2-0 on their road trip in Florida, downing No. 42 South Florida on Friday before Sunday’s win over Florida State.

On Sunday, it was Florida State who got out to a series of fast starts, but it was Clemson that finished.

The top four singles matches all went to three sets, despite Florida State winning the first set in each of the four matches. Each of Clemson’s players took the second set, and overall the Tigers were 6-0 in the second sets of the matches.

Nelly Ciolkowski earned her second straight win over a ranked player, as she downed No. 49 Katie Rybakova at flight three, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, to give Clemson a 3-2 lead in the match, setting the stage for one of Clemson’s top to players to clinch.

No. 58 Keri Wong bounced back from a 2-6 first-set loss to take the final two sets, 6-4, 6-3, and clinch the match for the Tigers from her flight two position.

The Seminoles got off to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point. Clemson’s No. 3-ranked tandem of Caroline Magnusson and Klara Vyskocilova at three to clinch the point.

Clemson got two back quickly in singles, with Magnusson defeating Ruth Seaborne, 6-4, 6-3 at flight five and Masha Belaya winning, 7-6, 6-3, at flight six.

Florida State knotted it up as Federica Suess down No. 104 Vyskocilova, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 at flight four.

This set up the results at the top three spots, which all fell to Clemson.

Bek, ranked 15th nationally, was the last to finish, as she defeated Francesca Segarelli at the top spot, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, to set the final margin at 5-2.

Clemson will have eight days off, as they return to action on March 21 at the College of Charleston.
