Clemson Edges Furman, 4-3, In Saturday Women’s Tennis Action

CLEMSON, SC – The Tiger women’s tennis team, ranked 27th in the latest FILA/ITA poll, won a close match over the #60 Furman Paladins, 4-3, at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. The win was Clemson’s third of the season, compared to just one defeat, while the loss dropped the Paladins to 2-5 overall.

The Tigers claimed all three doubles contests for the third time this year to go up 1-0 in the match. Clemson’s team of Carol Salge and Federica van Adrichem upset Furman’s 39th-ranked duo of Laura Gioia and Marti Mooris in the top doubles position by a score of 8-3. Maria Brito and Marie Scriba won at flight two for the Tigers by a similar 8-3 score over Shannon Moore and Lauren Osborne, while in the third position, Daniela Alvarez and Alexandra Luc paired up to defeat Jacqueline Eckert and Natasa Manojlovic, 8-4.

Salge clinched the victory for Clemson for the second straight match with a win over Morris at flight two, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, to improve her record to 4-0 during the dual season. Van Adrichem also won her contest for the Tigers, claiming a 6-1, 6-3 decision against Gioia in the top singles slot. At flight four, Luc defeated Moore by a score of 6-2, 6-3.

Brito suffered a tough three-set loss at the flight three position to Osborne, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, and Kathi Gerber fell to Furman’s Bonnie Baird by a 7-6(2), 6-2 margin in the number five match-up. Tiger freshman Scriba retired after the first set of her flight six contest to give Lauren Tomery the victory.

Clemson will be back in action on Sunday against in-state rival South Carolina. The Tigers and Gamecocks will take to the court at 1:00 PM in Columbia, SC.
