Clemson Drops ACC Opener at No. 10 Miami Sunday

CORAL GABLES, FL – The 34th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team (7-5, 0-1 ACC) dropped a 5-2 decision to the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes (7-1, 1-0 ACC) on Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, FL. The teams were scheduled to start at 10:30 AM, but had to wait out some rain, and didn’t get fully underway until nearly 1:15 PM. It was Miami’s 12th straight win in the series overall, and they improved to 24-4 all-time against the Tigers. Clemson has dropped four in a row and five of the last six after opening the season at 6-1. All five of the losses have come to teams ranked among the top 25 in the nation. Miami took the doubles point with wins at flights one and two, while Klara Vyskocilova and Monika Kochanova combined for their 11th straight win at flight three, and they improved to 15-2 overall this year with their 8-3 win over Anna Bartenstein and Brittany Dubins. Vyskocilova is now 21-4 this season in doubles overall, while Kochanova upped her mark to 18-5 in her first season. Vyskocilova also won her singles match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at flight six over Dubins to get Clemson on the board. Keri Wong, a two-time All-ACC performer, won her first league match of the seasona nd improved to 16-6 overall, upsetting No. 25 Gabriela Mejia, 6-7, 6-0, 1-0 (10-1) in three sets to give Clemson its’ second point, and give Wong her 94th career singles win. Freshman Beatrice Gumulya dropped a tough decision in three sets, winning the second set in a tiebreaker, but dropping the third set super-tiebreaker, 11-9 at flight three against Melissa Bolivar. Clemson will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Atlanta to take on No. 16 Georgia Tech. It will be their eighth straight dual match away from home, and the fifth of those against a team ranked in the top 25. No. 10 Miami (7-1, 1-0 ACC) def.
