Clemson defeats South Carolina

CLEMSON, SC–Clemson won five of the six singles matches and claimed the doubles point as the 21st-ranked Tigers defeated South Carolina 6-1 in a men’s intercollegiate tennis match at Clemson, SC Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, Clemson improves to 19-8 overall, while South Carolina falls to 13-12. The loss to the Tigers snapped a four-match winning streak by the Gamecocks, all to SEC competition.

Clemson won the first three singles matches including a win by Clement Reix over Tom Eklund of South Carolina at number one, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Tigers’ Sander Koning won at number two singles with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jaime Cuellar. Ryan Young also was victorious for the Tigers with a 6-7, 7-5, 6-0 win over Yevgeny Supeko at number three singles.

The Tigers have now won two of the last three matches against the Gamecocks, including a 6-1 win at Clemson in 2004.

Clemson will play host to Boston College and Maryland on Saturday, April 15, in an Atlantic Coast Conference double header for the Tigers. Action will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
