Clemson, SC – The 18th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis squad won 4-3 over #47 South Alabama on Saturday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. With the victory, the Tigers improve to 6-6 overall, while the Jaguars fall to 9-2. Julie Coin dominated her opponent once again as she bettered her overall record to 20-2 and 11-0 in dual action.
Clemson won all three doubles matches for the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Coin and Romy Farah teamed up at the No.1 slot to defeat the Jaguar duo of Katarina Palenikova and Maria Zivcicova, 8-3, while the Tigers’ Maria Brito and Richele LeSaldo won their contest at No.2 over Andrea Kurekova and Ana Rupic, 8-6. At No. 3, South Alabama’s Dijana Stanic and Dominika Nemcovicova fell to Ioana Paun and Carol Salge, 8-4.
In singles play, Coin, ranked #3 in the ITA singles poll, defeated Andrea Kurekova in the No.1 match-up, 6-3, 6-0. Farah easily took the No.2 contest with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rupic. Brito fell to Zivcicova at No.3 by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Salge won her match at No.4 against Palenikova, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, to clinch the victory for the Tigers. In the No. 5 position, Paun fell short in a three-set match against Nemcovicova, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, while the Jaguars’ Stanic defeated Richele LeSaldo at No.6, 7-6(4), 6-2.
The Tigers welcome the 24th-ranked Brigham Young Cougars to Clemson on Monday, Mar. 7. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm.
