Clemson Defeats Pittsburgh 5-2 on the Road Sunday

HARMAR, Pa. – The Clemson women’s tennis team won its second ACC road match of the weekend on Sunday afternoon, defeating Pittsburgh by a score of 5-2 in Harmar, Pa. For the second-straight match, three freshmen contributed to the team win, recording victories in singles play. With the win, Clemson improved to 10-7 overall and 8-4 in ACC play, while the Panthers fell to 7-11 (1-11 ACC).

In doubles play, the Panthers won the first of the three matches at No. 2, 6-2. The matches were extremely close at No. 1 and 3, with the Tigers coming out on top on both courts to claim the doubles point. Ayan Broomfield and Jenny Moinard were victorious in a tiebreak at No. 3, 7-6(2), while Joana Eidukonyte and Fernanda Navarro won 7-5 at No. 1.

Eidukonyte quickly gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. The Panthers won in two sets at No. 5 singles, before Broomfield put Clemson back up by two points with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1. Broomfield’s win put her at 8-4 in ACC singles matches, all played at No. 1. Moinard, who lost the first set at No. 6 singles, 3-6, bounced back with an impressive 6-0, 6-4 finish in the second and third sets to clinch the team victory for the Tigers. Navarro provided the final point for Clemson, winning her No. 3 singles match in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The Tigers return home for their final two regular season contests next weekend, both against teams ranked in the top 10 in the nation. Clemson hosts #2 North Carolina on Friday, April 15 at 2:30 p.m. and #8 Duke on Sunday, April 17 at 12 p.m. at Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
