Clemson Defeats Miami 6-1

CLEMSON, SC – Alejandro Augusto defeated Diego Soto at number-three singles in clinching the match and leading 23rd-ranked Clemson to a 6-1 victory over Miami in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s tennis match at Clemson, SC Friday afternoon. With the win, Clemson is now 14-2 overall, while Miami falls to 6-4 this season. This was the first Atlantic Coast Conference match for both teams. Clemson won the doubles point as the Tigers swept all three contests, including the number-one doubles match where Hunter Harrington and Dominique Maden defeated the Hurricanes’ Omar Al and Wilfredo Gonzalez 8-5. The Tigers continued the momentum in singles as Austin Ansari gave the Tigers a 2-0 advantage as he defeated Gonzalez 6-1, 6-1 at number-four singles. Ansari is 12-5 overall and 10-2 in dual matches. Clemson’s Maden gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead when he defeated Gabriel Flores 6-2, 6-3 at number-two singles. Maden is 11-5 overall and 8-2 in dual matches. Augusto, for the second match in a row, clinched the match for Clemson. He defeated Diego Soto 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 at number-three singles. He also clinched the match for the Tigers on Wednesday as Clemson defeated South Carolina 4-1. Augusto is now 11-6 overall in singles play and 8-2 in dual matches.Robert Dudley of Clemson defeated Henrique Tsukamoto 6-2, 6-3 at number-six singles. Dudley is 9-5 overall and 6-2 in dual matches. The Tigers’ Luke Johnson defeated William Albanese at number-five singes, 6-4, 6-3. Johnson is 13-4 overall and 11-1 in dual matches. In the last match off the courts today, Miami’s Omar Aly won over Hunter Harrington 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (8). Harrington drops to 16-7 overall, and 9-4 in dual matches. “We continue to show improvement in our play,” said Clemson Head Coach Chuck McCuen. “Our team yearns to improve and I think this one of the keys to being successful. This team is not satisfied with status quo, they want to get better and compete. “They challenge one another in practice. I feel as though we showed consistency in our play today. They implemented what we taught in practice. I’m very proud of the team and I thought we played well today. Alejandro Augusto had another great match, and this was the second straight match he clinched for us. “We will continue to work hard as we have Florida State coming in here Tuesday,” said McCuen.
