Clemson Defeats Maryland 3-1 in ACC Men’s Soccer Tournament

CLEMSON, SC-Ian Fuller, Oguchi Onyewu and Ross Goodacre all had one goal and one assist each as eighth-ranked Clemson defeated Maryland 3-1 in the third match of the quarterfinal round in the 15th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament at Clemson’s Riggs Field Thursday night.

In the semifinal round Friday, Virginia will play Wake Forest at 5:30 p.m. and North Carolina will play Clemson at 8:00 p.m. on Riggs Field. Clemson improves to 15-4 overall, while Maryland falls to 10-7-1 this season. Clemson is the third seed and Maryland is seeded sixth. Clemson is ranked eighth by Soccer America, and ninth in both the NSCAA and soccertimes.com poll. This is the first semifinal appearance for Clemson since the 1998 season, the year the Tigers won the championship. Maryland struck first at the 12:05 mark. Seth Stammler scored off a pass from Michael Dello-Russo. Dello-Russo crossed the ball to Stammler who sent a 18-yard, diagonal shot to the left corner of the goal.

Clemson evened the score at the 18:43 point. Oguchi Onyewu cleared the ball long to Ian Fuller. Fuller laid the ball on the right to Ross Goodacre who sent a 22-yard shot into the goal. This was Goodacre’s fifth goal of the season. The Tigers took a 2-1 lead late in the first half. Ross Goodacre served his corner kick to the far post to Nick Rivera. Rivera headed the ball down to Ian Fuller who headed the ball just inside the left post from six yards out. This was Fuller’s ninth goal of the season.

Oguchi Onyewu scored his fourth goal of the season and the Tigers had a 3-1 lead at the 53:56 point into the game. Fabio Tambosi lifted a pass from the left side to the right post. Onyewu’s sliding shot near the right post went into the center of the net.

“It has been three year since we have played in the semifinals. So obviously we are excited about this win. I thought we played a very good game tonight.. We feel behind but our kids came together and played well after Maryland gained early momentum. This is probably the best we have played all season for 90 minutes.”
