Clemson Announces 2013 Hall of Fame Class

CLEMSON, SC – A 10-person class that features five All-Americans, two National Champions, three ACC 50-Year Anniversary team members, a two-time ACC Coach of the Year, and one of the school’s best two-sport athletes will be inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame October 11-12.  Bill D’Andrea, executive director of the Tiger Letterwinner’s Association, made the announcement on Tuesday. The class will be honored the weekend of Clemson’s football game with Boston College.

The list of inductees includes Brentson Buckner and Terrence Flagler, two of Clemson’s top football players of their respective eras who went on to play in the Super Bowl at the NFL level.  Women’s track athletes Michelle Burgher and Cydonie Mothersill, who both claimed National Championship hardware, will be honored.  Men’s track athlete Julius Ogaro, the only Clemson track athlete to win the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters and 3000 meter steeplechase in the same ACC meet, and three-time All-ACC volleyball player Robin Kibben, also will be honored.

Cliff Ellis, the only Clemson men’s basketball coach to win ACC Coach of the Year honors and the coach of Clemson’s 1990 ACC Regular Season Championship team, will be inducted, along with ACC 50-Year Anniversary baseball team member Matthew LeCroy, and ACC 50-Year Anniversary women’s basketball team member Chrissy Floyd.

Ray Williams, a four-year starter and record holder in both football and baseball during the 1980s who played for legendary coaches Bill Wilhelm and Danny Ford, is also a member of the celebrated class of former Clemson athletes.

Below is a more detailed rundown of each person’s career:

BRENTSON BUCKNER, Football, 1990-93

  • Finished his career ranked in the top-five in Clemson history in tackles for loss (46) and sacks (22)
  • Starter on the 1991 ACC Championship team
  • First-team All-ACC in 1993
  • Played on three top-25 teams during his Clemson career, 1990 (9th), 1991 (17th), and 1993 (22nd)
  • Named the Peach Bowl Defensive MVP in Clemson’s win over Kentucky
  • Had 85 tackles as a junior and 84 as a senior
  • Second round pick (50th overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1994 NFL Draft
  • Played 12 seasons in the NFL
  • Played in two Super Bowls, one with Pittsburgh Steelers and one with Carolina Panthers

MICHELLE BURGHER, Track and Field, 2001

  • 2001 National Champion Outdoor 4x400m Relay
  • 2001 All-American Outdoor 4x400m Relay and 4X100 Relay
  • 2001 All-American Indoor 4x400m Relay
  • 2001 IAAF World Champion 4x400m Relay

CLIFF ELLIS, Men’s Basketball Head Coach, 1984-94

  • Finished his career as Clemson’s men’s basketball winningest coach in history (177)
  • Coached the Tigers for 10 years and went to eight postseason tournaments, three NCAAs and five NITs
  • Coached Clemson to the ACC regular season title in 1989-90, the first regular season ACC title in school history
  • Named ACC Coach of the Year twice; 1986-87 and 1989-90, only Clemson Coach to win the award
  • His 1986-87 team set a school record for most victories with 25
  • Set 33 coaching records while at Clemson
  • Led the Tigers to 22 victories over top-25 teams in his 10 years at Clemson
  • Currently head coach at Coastal Carolina

TERRENCE FLAGLER, Football, 1982-86

  • First-team All-American by the Football Writers Association in 1986
  • Runner-up ACC Player of the Year, 1986
  • 13th in nation in rushing in 1986 (1258 yards), third nationally in yards per carry (6.6)
  • Scored four touchdowns and had 274 all-purpose running yards in win over Wake Forest in 1986
  • Set Clemson regular-season record for rushing yards per game (107) in 1986
  • Member of the 1986 ACC Championship team
  • Finished his Clemson career in second place for most yards per carry
  • Drafted in the first round by the San Francisco 49ers in 1987
  • Played on two Super Bowl Championship teams with the 49ers

CHRISSY FLOYD, Women’s Basketball, 2000-03

  • Finished her career ranked second on the Clemson career list with 1,937 points
  • Named first team All-ACC in 2002 and 2003
  • Second-team All-ACC in 2000 and 2001
  • Became the fourth person in ACC history to be named All-ACC for four seasons
  • Finished 15th on the ACC Career list for most points scored with 1,937 points
  • Finished her career with 218 steals, sixth on the Clemson career list
  • Led Clemson in scoring for four straight seasons
  • Became the second player in Clemson history to lead the team in scoring for four seasons
  • Named to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 50th Anniversary Team
  • Named Kodak District II All-American in 2001, 2002 and 2003

ROBIN KIBBEN, Volleyball, 1991-94

  • First Clemson volleyball player in history to be a three-time first-team All-ACC selection
  • Named to AVCA All-South Region team as a junior and senior
  • First-team All-ACC Tournament in 1994
  • Set the Clemson career record for most kills and best hitting percentage
  • Led Clemson to its first two NCAA Tournament appearances in history, a 27-8 record in 1993 and a 28-8 mark in 1994

MATTHEW LeCROY, Baseball, 1995-97

  • Named to ACC 50-Year Anniversary baseball team
  • First-team All-ACC in 1996 and 1997
  • First-team All-American by Baseball America in 1997
  • Fourth all-time in career home runs with 53 and eighth in RBIs with 208
  • Clemson’s first ACC Rookie-of-the-Year in 1995
  • Homered in a five consecutive games in 1996
  • Member of the 1996 United States Olympic team
  • Number 50 selection of the Major League Draft in 1997
  • Starter on two Clemson College World Series teams
  • Played eight seasons in the Major Leagues, and hit 60 career home runs

CYDONIE MOTHERSILL, Track and Field, 2001

  • All-American 3000 Meter Steeplechase
  • Set the Clemson record for the 3000 meter steeplechase
  • Finished his career with the second best 10,000 meter time

RAY WILLIAMS, Football and Baseball, 1983-86

  • Two-sport starter at Clemson during his career
  • Four-year starter in the outfield in baseball and wide receiver in football
  • 11th in nation in kickoff returns as a freshman in 1983 with 23.5 yards per return average
  • Finished his career ranked in the top 25 in Clemson history for most receptions (86) and receiving yards (1,290)
  • Set the Clemson career record for most kickoff return yards with 1,350 for a 20.5 average
  • Finished in second place on the Clemson career list for most stolen bases with 70
  • First Clemson player in history to have at least 30 home runs and 70 stolen bases in a career
  • Played in 200 career baseball games and had 133 RBIs and 34 career home runs
