Clemson, SC.—Senior Coleman Self and freshman Zack Gordon won matches on Monday as Clemson and Ohio State played to an all-square team match at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. Clemson advanced to the semifinals of the tournament because the Tigers won the most total holes in the six matches.
Clemson and Georgia began their semifinal match but play was stopped due to lightning with all six matches on the front nine.
Five of the six matches between Clemson and Ohio State went to the 18th hole in the competitive match played on the par 72 course.
Clemson and Ohio State are two of eight teams competing in the match play championship that is being played at the site of the PGA’s Memorial Tournament. Each team won two matches and two were halved on Monday.
Self, playing at the No. 6 position, had the most dominating performance of the 12 players with his 4 & 3 victory. He took command by winning the 10th, 11th and 12th holes. His victory margin was the reason Clemson was able to advance to the semifinals.
Gordon won the 13th hole to take a 1-up lead. He and Kevin Stone then halved the last five holes to give Gordon the victory.
Clemson sophomore Turk Pettit won the 17th and 18th holes with birdies to get the half point against Caleb Ramirez at the No. 2 match. Will Voetsch won the 18th hole to get the halve against Clemson’s Kyle Cottam at the No. 4 match.
Will Grimmer defeated Clemson’s Bryson Nimmer at the No. 1 match. Nimmer was two-down after eight, but came back to square the match at the 16th hole. But Grimmer won the 17th hole to take the lead and both players made bogey on the 18th hole to give the Ohio State player the victory.
Daniel Wetterich defeated Clemson’s William Nottingham, 2-up at the No. 3 match. The two players were all square after eight before Wetterich took the lead at the ninth hole. He still had just a 1-up lead before winning the 18th hole.
