Brianna Rollins Breaks American Record, Wins USA Championship in 100 Hurdles

CLEMSON, SC – Former Clemson standout Brianna Rollins, running in her first professional meet, ran to an American record in the 100 hurdles on Saturday at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, IA.  She raced to a time of 12.26, breaking Gail Devers’ record of 12.33 that had stood since 2000.  Rollins won the USA crown, only the second in history for a Tiger female in any event. The three-time NCAA Champion separated herself from the field in Saturday’s final.  At first it appeared Rollins knocked over several hurdles, but television replays showed it came from the next lane overa.  The Nike product will now compete for Team USA in August at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow.  Rollins is Clemson’s first USA Champion in women’s track & field since Kim Graham won the 400 dash in 1998. “I just have to thank God for blessing me with this talent,” Rollins told NBC Sports after the race.  “I’m just so overwhelmed right now!” Rollins was not defeated in three hurdles races this week at Drake Stadium, where she now owns the facility record.  In 2013, she has yet to be defeated in 20 tries in the high hurdles (including indoor season).  Her time ranks in a tie for third-best in history. Another hurdler, current sophomore Keni Harrison, was 10th in the 400 hurdles.  She missed the final by two spots, clocking a time of 57.19. Spencer Adams, a five-time All-American for the Tigers, advanced to Sunday’s semifinals in the 110 hurdles.  The Charlotte, NC native clocked a time of 13.49 to take the third automatic spot out of his qualifying heat.  The top four in each semifinal move on to the final, which will be held Sunday evening.  Adams will first compete at 3:40 PM ET. Dezerea Bryant qualified for the semifinals in her second event of the week.  She posted a time of 22.66 to auto qualify from the second section of the 200 prelims.  Bryant had the 12th-best time overall.  She will compete Sunday at 3:22 ET. Miller Moss, 2011 NCAA heptathlon winner at Clemson, was in fourth place through eight events of the decathlon before hitting a rough patch in the javelin.  He finished ninth with just over 7,500 points.   One current and one former Tiger will compete in the field Sunday.  Torian Ware, a sophomore, will participate in the high jump at 2:45 ET.  George Kitchens, a 2012 U.S. Olympian, will vie for a spot on the World Championships team in the long jump at 3:30 ET.
