Berney Leads Clemson Baseball Over James Madison, 5-1

CLEMSON, S.C. – Behind senior righthander Scott Berney, #9 Clemson defeated the James Madison University Dukes 5-1 Friday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Clemson improved to 6-1, while James Madison dropped to 6-3.

Berney (3-0) continued his stellar pitching of 2000, picking up the victory for the Tigers in 8.0 innings of work. He yielding only six hits, walked one, and struck out four in only 84 pitches. Berney has not allowed a run this season, a span of 22.0 innings, and has a 15-1 strike-out-to-walk ratio. Nick Glaser picked up his third save of the season. John Gouzd (0-2) suffered the loss for the Dukes.

Clemson jumped out to an early lead in the second inning. Jeff Baker led off the inning with a single. After stealing second, Baker scored on an RBI single by Henri Stanley. Then Stanley scored on an RBI single by Brian Ellis to make the score 2-0. After a fly out to left field by Jarrod Schmidt, Casey Stone laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by Duke pitcher Gouzd, which allowed Ellis to score. The Tigers put their fourth run of the inning on the board when Stone scampered home thanks to a sacrifice fly by Ryan Riley. Riley was one of four Tigers with two hits in the game.

The Tigers added their fifth and final run of the game in the fifth inning when Michael Johnson scored on an RBI single by Baker.

The Dukes scored their run in the ninth inning when Bender scored on a bases loaded walk drawn by Matt Deuchler. But Nick Glaser relieved Kevin Lynn and struck out both batters he faced with the bases loaded to thwart the threat.

Four Duke hitters had two hits apiece, including T Riley, Jeremy Hays, Brent Metheny, and Bender. The Dukes left nine runners on base.

The two teams will play the second of three games on Saturday at 2:00.
