Baseball Prospects Lead USA National Team

July 7, 1998

CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson junior-to-be Ryan Mottl pitched 7.0 innings, allowing just seven hits, one run, and two walks to pick up his second win to no defeats for the USA National Team in its 4-3 win over the Japan College All-Stars. It was the second game of a doubleheader on July 6 at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, AZ. The Japan College All-Stars won the first game by an 8-5 score. Mottl brought his ERA down to 4.18 (six games, five starts).

Patrick Boyd, a rising sophomore from Palm Harbor, FL, was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the win batting in the ninth spot in the lineup. Boyd is hitting .238, but is one of three players to play in 27 of the 28 games for the USA National Team.

The two teams will conclude their five-game series on July 7.
