Baseball Downs Old Dominion, 5-0

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson blanked Old Dominion 5-0 Friday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in the Tigers’ home opener. Clemson improved to 3-1 while Old Dominion fell to 2-3-1.

Scott Berney pitched effectively for the second straight outing, as he went 7.0 innings, holding the Monarchs to three hits and no walks. Berney (2-0) threw just 73 pitches, 54 strikes and 19 balls in earning the victory. In two outings as a Tiger, Berney has pitched 14.0 innings, allowing no runs, no walks, and only six hits while striking out 11. In both games Berney has pitched, the opponent failed to score a single run. Starter Brian Ross (0-2) suffered the loss for the Monarchs.

Clemson scored first in the third inning when Jeff Baker hit an RBI single that brought home Casey Stone. Baker’s single gave the Tigers an early 1-0 lead that would hold until the fifth inning when the Tiger bats would spark to life again.

Ryan Riley, playing in his first career game as a Tiger, started the Tigers off in the fifth inning when he laced a double to the left field fence. Riley was brought home by Khalil Greene’s RBI single. The Tigers continued to score as Greene crossed the plate thanks to Brian Ellis’ two run single. Brian Holstad rounded out the inning with an RBI single.

Riley led the Tiger offensive attack with two walks and three stolen bases as he went 2-for-3. Brian Ellis went 2-for-4 and drove home two of Clemson’s five runs.

Old Dominion was led offensively by Tim Hummel, who went 2-for-3 with a double to center field.

Clemson and Old Dominion will continue their series on Saturday at 2:00.
