TALLAHASSEE, Fla – No. 1 Florida State extended its winning streak to 21 games as right-hander Jon McDonald struck out 11 batters in a 8-0 victory over Clemson for the Seminoles’ first shutout of the season in front of 3,543 at Dick Howser Stadium.

FSU stayed perfect in ACC play (13-0) and improved to 35-3 on the season, while Clemson fell to 18-14 and 2-4 in conference play.

The Seminoles jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with four runs in the first and three in the second. Matt Diaz, Kevin Cash and Jeremiah Klosterman belted RBI-singles in the first inning, while second baseman Marshall McDougall walked and scored on a ground ball out by Sam Scott to give the Seminoles a 3-0 advantage.

Leftfielder John-Ford Griffin blasted his first career homer driving in shortstop Brett Groves who reached on a single adding two more runs to FSU’s lead. McDougall then doubled and scored on a bases loaded walk by catcher Jeremiah Klosterman in the second inning for the Seminoles’ seventh run.

Centerfielder Chris Smith singled and scored on a McDougall’s third basehit of the night to give FSU its final run in the seventh inning.

The game marked the first time Clemson has been shutout since a 10-0 loss to the Seminoles in the final game of the 1997 ACC Tournament. The streak ended at 94 games. It was also the Seminoles’ first shutout in 71 games since a win over Mercer last season.
