CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson left back Charlie Asensio has been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 28-Oct. 4, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. Asensio played all 90 minutes in Clemson’s lone match of the week, a 2-1 comeback victory over conference rival Wake Forest.
Asensio has been a rock at the left back position for the Tigers all season, starting all but one game and playing a team-high (excluding goalkeepers) 767 minutes. Not only is he a steady force on the outside of the backline, the senior’s presence can be felt each game in the counterattack, as evidenced by his two assists on the season.
The native of Roswell, Ga. joins goalkeeper George Marks as Tigers awarded with the conference’s weekly honor, with Marks winning it twice for the week of August 23 and September 6. This however marks Asensio’s first career ACC Player of the Week recognition.
The Tigers will be back in action tonight when they hit the road to take on Coastal Carolina. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and the match will stream on ESPN+. Clemson soccer and Asensio in particular will be featured on tomorrow night’s installment of “All Access: The ACC Life” airing at 7 p.m. on ACC Network.
