Following Clemson’s 2-0 victory over Washington in the National Championship on Sunday, senior defender Oskar Ågren, who was named to the All-NCAA Tournament team, has been tabbed a MAC Hermann Trophy finalist, United Soccer Coaches announced on Wednesday. Ågren, a second-team All-American, is the first finalist for the award from Clemson since Robbie Robinson, who won the trophy in 2019.
Ågren joins Georgetown’s Dante Polvara and Washington’s Dylan Teves as the three finalists for college soccer’s most prestigious individual award. The winner will be announced on January 7, 2022 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. USWNT star and former Hermann winner Crystal Dunn will be the featured speaker. If he were to win, he would be Clemson’s fourth recipient of the trophy.
The centerpiece of Clemson’s backline had an extraordinary season, leading the Tigers’ defense to a national championship and 10 total shutouts over the course of the year. He may have saved his best game for last, as he recorded the assist on Isaiah Reid’s goal just 27 seconds into the championship match and held No. 2 Washington’s impressive offense to just six shots and two on target.
Ågren’s defensive prowess is not his only contribution to the team, as he has notched five goals and three assists. That’s not to mention his successful penalty kicks in the shootouts against Oregon State and Notre Dame.
