CLEMSON, S.C. — Oscar Bredkjaer shot an even-par 72 on Friday to lead Clemson during the first round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga. The Tigers had a team score of seven-over-par 295 to finish the first round in 13th place out of 14 teams.
Virginia, the number-one team in the nation, leads the event after 18 holes with a 16-under-par team score.
The field is one of the strongest of the fall collegiate season as nine of the top 30 teams, including 27th ranked Clemson, are in the field for the 54-hole tournament on the par 72 course that measures 6,993 yards.
Bredkjaer, Clemson’s top golfer with a 70.89 stroke average so far this year, got off to a great start with an eagle on the par five first hole. He made three more birdies on the front nine to make the turn at five-under-par 31 and had a two-shot lead. But the transfer from San Francisco shot 41 on the back nine to finish at even par 72 for the day.
Bredkjaer missed Clemson’s last tournament at Marquette because he was playing for Denmark in the World Team Amateur Championship. He finished 11th out of 108 golfers at that international event.
Sophomores Colin Salema and Rich Wills both finished with scores of one-over-par 73 in the first round. Salema had a birdie-birdie start, while Wills played the final 11 holes one-under-par and bogey free.
Seniors Lucas Augustsson and Thomas Higgins both shot one-under-par 35 on the back nine, but struggled on the front and finished the first round with identical scores of five-over-par 77.
The tournament continues Saturday with the second round. Live scoring is available on clippd.results.com
