Tigers Win Regular Season Finale over Virginia Tech

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team (10-11, 3-10 ACC) closed out its regular season on Easter Sunday afternoon at Duckworth Family Tennis Facility with a 6-1 victory over Virginia Tech (6-16, 2-11 ACC). The Tigers won the doubles point for the first time in eight matches and carried the momentum through the remainder of the match.

Samantha Buyckx and Ali DeSpain continued their stellar performance in doubles, improving to 10-4 on the season with a 6-2 win on Court 1. Knotted at one match apiece, Jenna Thompson and Dani Medvedeva battled to clinch the doubles point on Court 3 in thrilling 7-5 fashion.

The Tigers brought a strong energy into singles play, as Buyckx made quick work on Court 6 to win in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. Medvedeva followed suit, clinching her match 6-2, 6-1 moments later.

Virginia Tech began to put pressure on Clemson with a win on Court 4, but Thompson had other plans, disposing of her opponent on Court 3, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the victory for Clemson.

“So proud of our team and the way we competed today!” said Head Coach Christy Lynch. “Finishing strong on our home courts was really important to us. Getting the doubles point was great today. We really competed well on every court. Eleni finished us off today with a win and had ‘no quit’ in her. We will get some rest now and get ready to compete hard next week in Rome!”

The remaining matches were played out and Cristina Mayorova secured a victory in three sets, while Eleni Louka closed out an epic marathon of a battle on Court 1 in a third set tiebreak, taking the match 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9).

Up next, the Tigers will again face off with Virginia Tech, this time in the ACC Tournament in Rome, Ga. on Wednesday. First serve is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
