CLEMSON, SC – Reed Matte and Mladen Lemez both scored goals in leading 24th-ranked Alabama Birmingham to a 2-0 victory over Clemson in a men’s intercollegiate soccer match at Clemson, SC Monday night.With the win, UAB improves to 3-2-1 overall, while Clemson falls to 1-3-2 this season. The Blazers are ranked 24th nationally in the latest poll.Alabama Birmingham scored first with 5:06 gone in the match. Reed Matte fired a 14-yard diagonal shot off a clearance into the netting for his first goal of the season.In the 58th minute, Clemson’s Andy Anglade dribbled into the box and crossed the ball to Kyle Murphy in the air. Murphy headed the ball from 12 yards out just over the goal.The Blazers scored again off of a free kick in the 61st minute. From 20 yards out, Mladen Lemez fired a shot into the net for his second goal of the season.In the 65th minute, Clemson had another scoring opportunity. Jack Metcalf crossed the ball from the right inside the box. Manolo Sanchez‘s shot from eight yards out just missed just wide of the left post.With 20 minutes remaining the Tigers’ Murphy sent a 24-yard diagonal shot towards the goal and the UAB goalkeeper Raphael Ville, made a save near the right post.Clemson will play at Duke on Friday in the Tigers’ next action.
