21st-Ranked Tigers Upset #16 Wake Forest On Sunday, 4-3

CLEMSON, SC – The 21st-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team posted a 4-3 upset of #16 Wake Forest to conclude the 2006 regular season on Sunday afternoon. The win gives the Tigers a 15-6 overall record with an 8-3 ledger in ACC play, while the Demon Deacons fell to 12-8 overall and 5-6 in the conference. The teams will now await pairings for the ACC Tournament to be held Apr. 20-23.

Clemson freshman Federica van Adrichem clinched the win for the Tigers for the second straight day with a three-set victory at the flight three singles position. She dropped the first set to Ana Jerman, 6-4, but rebounded to claim the second set by a score of 6-2. Jerman then led, 4-3, in the third set before van Adrichem won the next two points to take a 5-4 advantage. Jerman tied the score at 5-5 and then van Adrichem held serve and broke Jerman for the 7-5 win.

In other singles action, Clemson’s Carol Salge recorded a 6-4, 6-4 upset of 38th-ranked Alex Hirsch at the top position, her 10th singles win at home against no losses. Salge is also now 9-2 against ACC opponents. Alexandra Luc also posted a singles victory for the Tigers, defeating Sierra Poske at the flight five slot by a score of 7-5, 6-4.

The Demon Deacons claimed wins at the two, four and six positions for their three points of the afternoon. Ashlee Davis won a three-set match over Daniela Alvarez at number two, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, while Christian Tara defeated Maria Brito in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, at flight four. Kathi Gerber then fell to Wake Forest’s Christine Simpson by a 6-0, 7-5 margin at number six.

The Tigers also won two doubles matches en route to their 15th doubles point of the year. Ninth-ranked Salge and van Adrichem defeated Hirsch and Poske at the flight one position, 9-7, while Clemson’s #56 team of Alvarez and Luc won by an 8-3 margin over Tara and Simpson at number two. The Demon Deacons avoided the sweep as Davis and Jerman claimed an 8-5 decision against Brito and Marie Scriba.
