Tigers Defeat Rebels to Win Clemson Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 9/9 Clemson Tigers (11-2) defeated the Ole Miss Rebels (11-3), 5-0, on Sunday afternoon in McWhorter Stadium. With five different Tigers scoring runs and the defense playing lights out, the Tigers won the Clemson Classic. With today’s victory, Clemson now has three shutouts in 2024.

The score stayed even at 0-0 through the first three innings. Both sides were able to get runners in scoring position in the third but failed to bring anyone home as the pitching staffs and defenses for Clemson and Ole Miss picked up the third out in each half inning.

Clemson broke open the scoring with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. After Lindsey Garcia found the right-center gap for a double, Aby Vieira clocked her fourth RBI of the weekend with a double into right field. Garcia scored to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers extended the lead in the bottom of the fifth after loading the bases on a couple of defensive errors by the Rebels. The first run in the fifth came off a wild pitch that had Alex Brown scoring from third. With two outs, Garcia reached on a throwing error by Ole Miss’ third baseman that allowed Maddie Moore, Julia Bomhardt, who was running for Vieira, and Valerie Cagle to score to make it 5-0.

Senior Millie Thompson started in her second game of the season and pitched 2.1 innings with one strikeout. After facing 11 batters, Thompson was replaced by Valerie Cagle, who notched 5 strikeouts in her 4.2 innings of work.
