2006 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team Announced

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference released the 2006 All-ACC Academic Baseball team announced Thursday by Commissioner John D. Swofford. All 12 league schools competing in baseball are represented on the inaugural team with Clemson leading all schools with seven honorees.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

Clemson placed seven student-athletes on this year’s academic squad following an ACC Championship title and its 11th appearance in the College World Series. Headlining the Tiger group is senior hurler Josh Cribb, a first-team All-ACC performer and second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Joining Cribb are All-Tournament team performers Brad Chalk, Sean Clark and Taylor Harbin.

Florida State was honored with six honorees on the inaugural academic team. Junior pitcher Bryan Henry was named an All-ACC first-team performer in 2006 after leading the team, among starters, in innings pitched (115.2) and ERA (2.88). Buster Posey, a freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and an ACC All-Tournament team selection, was also named to the squad.

Georgia Tech and Wake Forest each placed five student-athletes on the academic team. The Yellow Jacket’s Steven Blackwood, a senior outfielder majoring in biology, was named a third-team CoSIDA Academic All-American. Allan Dykstra was honored as the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2006, along with being recognized as a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and a member of the All-ACC second-team.

The Maryland Terrapins earned four spots on the academic team, followed by Boston College, Duke, NC State and Virginia with three selections apiece. The Wolfpack’s Jonathan Still was a second-team All-ACC honoree, while the Cavaliers’ Thomas Hagan received first-team all-conference accolades. Rounding out this year’s squad was Virginia Tech with two selections, while the Miami Hurricanes and North Carolina Tar Heels each placed one student-athlete on the team.

Chalk, Blackwood, UNC’s Adam Warren and Miami’s Andrew Lane were all recipients of the academic achievement award at the 2006 College World Series for earning the highest GPA on their respective teams.
