#17 Clemson Women’s Tennis Upsets 12th-Ranked North Carolina 4-3 On Sunday

CLEMSON, SC – The 17th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team upset #12 North Carolina by a score of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in Clemson. With the win, the Tigers clinched sole possession of second place in the regular season Atlantic Coast Conference standings for the first time since the 1994 season. Clemson improves to 17-4 overall and 7-1 in the ACC, while the Tar Heels fall to 15-7 and 6-2 in the conference.

North Carolina won two out of three doubles matches to win the doubles point. At flight one, the Tigers’ 27th-ranked team of Julie Coin and Laurence Jayet fell to North Carolina’s 16th-ranked duo of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis by a score of 8-3. At number two doubles, Clemson’s #48 Daniela Alvarez and Alix Lacelarie defeated the Tar Heels’ Lee Bairos and Marlene Mejia, 8-6 to remain undefeated in matches at flight two doubles (15-0). The Tigers’ Anna Dolinska and Richele LeSaldo lost an 8-6 decision to #40 Kendrick Bunn and Kate Pinchbeck at flight three.

In singles action, 19th-ranked Coin defeated #38 Mejia, 6-3, 6-1 at flight one. At number two singles, #106 Lacelarie of Clemson earned her second consecutive upset, defeating 67th-ranked Aniela Mojzis by a score of 6-3, 6-3. The Tigers’ Alvarez won a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Bairos at flight three, while Clemson’s Ioana Paun dropped a three-set decision (6-4, 6-7(8-6), 10-6) to Cline at the number four spot. At flight five, Jayet was victorious over Tanja Markovic of North Carolina, 6-2, 6-4, while the Tigers’ Ana Stiglic fell to Bunn, 6-1, 6-4, at six singles.

The Tigers will travel to Raleigh, NC to compete in the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Championships on Apr. 17-20. The tournament will be held at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center.
