#16 Clemson Falls to #3 Georgia 5-2 in Women’s Tennis Action on Saturday Afternoon

Clemson,SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team, ranked 16th in the latest ITA poll, fell to third-ranked Georgia on Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-2. The Tigers are now 3-4 overall while the Bulldogs improve to 6-1.

Georgia won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead they would never relinquish. At the number one doubles position, Caroline Basu and Shadisha Robinson of Georgia defeated Clemson’s Julie Coin and Romy Farah, 8-6. The Tigers won the number two doubles match-up as Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito defeated Evgenia Subbotina and Kelley Hyndman by a score of 8-3. Clemson’s Richele LeSaldo and Carol Salge fell to Natalie Frazier and Jitka Schonfeldova in the number three contest, 8-3.

In singles competition, the Tigers won matches at the number one and number three positions. Senior Coin, ranked fifth by the ITA, won her match at the top slot over #10Robinson (6-4, 7-6(1) to remain undefeated in duel play. She is now 6-0 in dual matches and 15-2 overall. Brito was victorious over Subbotina, 6-3, 7-5. She improves to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in dual matches.

The Bulldogs were too much for Clemson in the bottom of the lineup. Hyndman defeated the Tigers’ Alvarez in the number four match-up, 7-5, 7-6(6), while Ioana Paun fell to Georgia’s Basu at number five, 6-1, 6-2. Schonfeldova clinched the match for the Bulldogs at the number six contest with a victory over Carol Salge, 7-5, 6-4.

Georgia also took the number two singles match as #39 Natalie Frazier defeated #88 Romy Farah, 7-5, 6-4.

Clemson returns to action on Monday, Feb. 21 against the Harvard Crimson. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center in Clemson, SC.
