CLEMSON, SC – The 15th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team won a 4-3 decision over #32 Baylor on Sunday afternoon in Clemson. With the win, the Tigers improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Bears fall to 0-4 overall.
In doubles action, the Tigers’ 12th-ranked team of Maria Brito and Julie Coin won an 8-2 decision over #45 Stephanie Balzert and Daria Potapova of Baylor at flight one. At number two doubles, Clemson’s Richele LeSaldo and Karen Rombouts, currently ranked in a tie for 49th by the ITA, defeated Carolin Walter and Klara Zrustova by a score of 8-6. The Tigers’ Daniela Alvarez and Silvia Gutierrez were victorious over Baylor’s Iva Mihaylova and Izabela Mijic by a score of 8-2 at flight three doubles.
In singles play, the Tigers’ ninth-ranked Coin fell in three sets to the Bears’ Walter (5-7, 7-5, 6-3) at number one singles. At flight two, #40 Alvarez defeated Balzert, 6-2, 6-1. Clemson’s Rombouts won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Zuzana Krchnakova at flight three, while the Tigers’ #78 Brito defeated Potapova, 6-3, 6-4 at number four singles. The Tigers’ Ioana Paun lost a 6-4, 7-5 decision at flight five to Zrustova, while Gutierrez of Clemson fell to Mihaylova of Baylor, 4-6, 6-2 (10-7) at six singles.
The Tigers will return to action on Feb. 14 as they travel to Columbia to take on the Gamecocks. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
