#14 Clemson Women’s Tennis Takes Down #20 Ole Miss, 4-3

CLEMSON, SC – For the second straight day, Clemson came from behind to defeat a ranked opponent, winning Sunday by a 4-3 margin over #20 Ole Miss at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. The Tigers (5-0) needed Estefania Balda’s win at #6 singles to take down the Rebels in the second round of the ITA Kick-Off weekend, which feeds into the ITA Team Indoor National Championships.

 

Earlier in the day, #32 Illinois defeated #37 Texas A&M, 4-2, in the consolation match. The Tigers dropped the doubles point, but rebounded to win four singles matches to clinch the victory, Clemson’s fourth against ranked opponents in 2010.

 

In doubles, Estefania Balda’s, 9-7 to clinch the doubles point.

 

Clemson then responded in singles play, as #113 Ina Hadziselimovic made quick work of 101st-ranked Abby Guthrie, winning 7-5, 6-0 at flight three.  Keri Wong then gave Clemson the 2-1 lead as she defeated Karen Nijssen, 7-6(5), 6-2 at flight two, keeping her record a perfect 5-0 in 2010.

 

61st-ranked Nelly Ciolkowski then battled #119 Connor Vogel for three sets, emerging with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win to give Clemson a 3-1 lead. Ciolkowski moves to 12-1 in her freshman campaign and 5-0 in the dual match season.

 

#40 Kristi Boxx of Mississippi then defeated ninth-ranked Josipa Bek, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, fighting of match point in the second set. With the loss, Bek fell to 15-2 all-time in three-set matches.

 

Laura van de Stroet then took down Saturday’s hero, Laurianne Henry in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to even the match at three apiece.

 

The final decision came down to Estefania Balda’s and Gabriela Rangel at number-six singles for the right to advance to the Final 16 of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Balda took the first set, 6-1, then held serve to take a 5-4 lead. She then broke serve, clinching the match for the Tigers, 4-3.

 

Clemson will advance to the Final 16 of the National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, WI from February 12-15. In the meantime, Clemson will travel to Furman on the Feb. 4 before going to Athens, GA to take on 4th-ranked Georgia.
