CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team celebrated Senior Day and concluded the 2005 regular season by defeating #16 Duke, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Tigers improved to 17-7 overall and 8-2 in the ACC. The Blue Devils fell to 14-9 overall and 5-5 in conference action. Clemson claimed the doubles point for the 14th consecutive match and 18th time during the season.
The Tigers captured all three doubles contests against the Blue Devils, beginning with Romy Farah and Carol Salge’s 8-3 defeat of Saras Arasu and Parker Goyer at the flight three match. Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito won at flight two over Tory Zawacki and Clelia Deltour, 8-6. At flight one, the 53rd-ranked team of Julie Coin and Alix Lacelarie edged Duke’s Kristin Cargill and Jackie Carleton, 8-6. The Tiger duo broke the Blue Devils’ serve to take its first lead at 7-6 and then Coin served the winner.
In singles action, Clemson won four matches for the 5-2 victory margin. Salge quickly defeated Zawacki at flight five, 6-1, 6-2, while #2 Coin took the flight one match-up against Carleton by a score of 6-3, 6-2 Coin bettered her overall record to 31-3 and her ACC mark to 9-1 with the win. At flight two, #80 Farah fell to Duke’s Clelia Deltour, 6-4, 6-1, her first conference loss. Senior Ioana Paun then clinched the match for the Tigers with a victory over Parker Goyer in the flight six singes contest, 6-0, 7-5. Alvarez lost the first set to the Blue Devils’ Kristen Cargill at flight four, 4-6, but claimed the second set, 6-4, to force a third, which she also won, 6-2, to post the win. Duke’s Saras Arasu defeated Brito in the flight three match-up, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(10-8).
The 2005 ACC Women’s Tennis Tournament begins on Thursday, April 21 in Cary, NC. Clemson will likely begin defense of their title on Friday, but the match times are yet to be determined.
