12th-Ranked Tigers Upset at #19 Miami

CORAL GABLES, FL – The 19th-ranked Miami Hurricanes knocked off #12 Clemson in Coral Gables, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers (11-3, 1-1 ACC) had been 5-0 on the road this season before the loss to the Hurricanes (5-3, 1-0 ACC).

Clemson couldn’t close out a challenging week undefeated, as the Tigers won at #24 South Carolina on Sunday and #14 Georgia Tech on Wednesday before traveling to Miami. The win was the ninth straight for Miami over the Tigers, whose three losses this season have all come to top-20 opponents.

The #16th-ranked duo of Ina Hadziselimovic won at flight one, 8-3, over Vallverdu and Eichkorn. Meanwhile, at flight three, Bartenstein and Wasilewski came back form a 3-2 deficit to win, 8-5 over Estefania Balda and Laurianne Henry came back from a 7-4 deficit to force a tiebreak, but fell 9-8, giving Miami the doubles point.

Estefania Balda got the Tigers’ only point, defeating Claudia Wasilewski at flight six, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) with a strong comeback after dropping the first set. Balda’s was the last match to finish.

Miami got quick victories at flights three at two, as #89 Anna Bartenstein defeated Hadziselimovic, 6-3, 6-2, and #55 Bianca Eichkorn defeated #65 Wong, 6-3, 6-0 to give Miami a 3-0 lead.

Danielle Mills then dropped Laurianne Henry then fell 6-4, 6-3 to #118 Gabriela Mejia at flight five. Henry had won seven of her last eight matches.

#18 Josipa Bek lost to #7 Laura Vallverdu, 7-6, 6-3 at flight one.

Clemson returns to action on Mar. 5 against #29 South Florida before getting back into ACC play with #15 Florida State on March 7. Each of those matches will take place in Clemson, who has played six straight matches away from home.
