#10 Tigers Top Georgia 3-1 in Home Opener Sunday

CLEMSON, S.C. – Three different seniors, Claire Wagner, Jenna Weston and Paige Reckert, scored to lead 10th-ranked Clemson to a 3-1 victory over Georgia on Sunday evening at Historic Riggs Field. With the win, the Tigers improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-1-1.

Senior defender Claire Wagner put the Tigers’ first goal on the board in the 31st minute of play. Wagner came up with a loose ball near the top of the box and sent it into the right side of the net for her first goal of the season.

Just over a minute into the second half, Clemson struck again. Katie Sprouse passed the ball out to Julie Mackin on the left side, who sent a cross into the box for Jenna Weston. The senior forward scored her first goal of the season from six yards to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Two minutes later, Georgia cut the lead in half when Marion Crowder netted an unassisted goal in the 49th minute.

Senior forward Paige Reckert scored the Tigers’ third and final goal in the 64th minute of play, less than one minute after entering the match. Reckert was assisted by Weston and Mackin on the play. The assist was the second of the match for Mackin, a freshman midfielder.

Freshman Sandy MacIver started her second career match in goal for the Tigers and picked up two saves, as well as the win.

Clemson returns to action on Friday, Aug. 26 when it travels to Morgantown, W.Va. to face sixth-ranked West Virginia. The match between the Tigers and Mountaineers is set for 7 p.m. at Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
