#10 Clemson Defeats #20 South Florida, 6-1

CLEMSON, SC – The 10th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team took down their fifth top-25 opponent of 2010 with a 6-1 win over #20 South Florida (5-4) at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. The Tigers (12-3, 1-1 ACC) are in the midst of a five-match stretch against top-25 foes, and are 3-1 so far. A Sunday showdown with #13 Florida State at noon looms for Clemson.

South Florida took a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point, winning at flights one and three. South Florida’s tandem of Bejikova and Shumate quickly took down Estefania Balda and Nelly Ciolkowski at flight three, 8-2, to gain the advantage.

Meanwhile, flight one featured the 14th and 15th ranked duos in the nation, with the lower ranked team of Koning and Rehberger taking down Ina Hadziselimovic, 8-5, clinching the point for the Bulls.

Laurianne Henry and Keri Wong finished out their match with Mueller and Vasenina, winning an 8-4 decision.

Keri Wong evened the match at one apiece, defeating Melissa Konging at flight two, 6-3, 6-1. Wong is ranked #58 currently, a career-high for the sophomore from Jackson, MS.

Henry dispatched Jessica Zok at flight five, 6-4, 6-2 to give Clemson the lead for good, as Bek and Ciolkowski would finish up shortly thereafter to clinch the match.

Ciolkowski, ranked 68th, won 6-3, 6-2 at flight four over Janette Bejikova, to earn her 19th singles win of her career, and moves her to 12-2 in the dual meet season.

#24 Josipa Bek took down #35 Irene Rehberger, 6-1, 6-4 at flight one, building a bit of momentum after turning a 3-3 tie into the 6-4 second-set win.

Balda was next to finish, splitting two sets before winning super tiebreaker to win at flight six, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 over Natalia Guevara.

Hadziselimovic was last to finish, winning a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Ecaterina Vasesina, and helping Clemson to sweep the singles matches.

Clemson gets back into ACC play on Sunday at #13 Florida State comes to town for a noon start at the Hokes loan Tennis Center.
